On June 13, 1902, Mrs. Emma V. Kelly founded, along with 13 other women in Norfolk, Virginia, the Daughters of the Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World. Founder Kelly was the SOLE organizer of the Daughters' first constitution and their first publication. That work, coming on the heels of the "First Century" of Black freedom from slavery, stands as the solvent "right arm" of the world's largest African-American fraternal order came together for the first time.
Mrs. Kelly demonstrated unyielding determination and genius in guiding the organization to its present status.
Currently, worldwide, the Daughters of Elks boasts over 65,000 members.
Mrs. Kelly passed away on December 14, 1932. She left an indelible mark on the organization that beats within the hearts of her Daughters.
